How do I edit my host file Print

Sometimes, it may be necessary to view your site, before it's live, but using the actual live domain.  In a situation like this, where a temporary url will not work, we recommend making a change to your host file.

modify c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts - right click - open with - notepad.

Type in the IP of the website that is not live yet, - and the URL you are wishing to point to it.
Create a second line for "www."

save and restart your browser.

OR install the Firefox addon "Change Hosts" and create a new definition with the same info

1.2.3.4 example.com
1.2.3.4 www.example.com

Be aware that until you remove the changes you've made, you will ALWAYS be directed to the IP listed in the host file, for the domain specified.
